在西方,人們很少談年齡這一敏感的問題。在西方人看來,“老”就意味著“不中用了”,“該退休了”,所以“old”也就成了他們忌用的詞,而用“seasoned man”“elderly people”,“senior citizen”來代替。如果用“old”一詞來表示稱呼上了年紀(jì)的人,他們就會(huì)感到不快,覺得尊嚴(yán)受到損害。因此就用getting on years(年歲增長(zhǎng)),advanced in age(高壽),senior citizens(年長(zhǎng)的公民),past one's prime(過了鼎盛期)和reach one's golden age(進(jìn)入黃金年華)等來替代老字。也就是說,詢問西方國(guó)家女士的年齡是相當(dāng)不禮貌的事,像“How old are you?”之類的表達(dá)是不宜在正式交際中出現(xiàn)的。
