Yahoo Groups will soon be shutting down, with users having until December 14 to save any uploaded content.

Nothing new will be able to be posted to the site after October 28, and all content online will be permanently deleted after the December cut-off date, Yahoo has announced.

The company said that although the Yahoo Groups will continue to exist, all public groups will be made private or restricted and require administrator approval to join. Admins will have limited access to group settings and tools.

The site, which was launched in 2001, was originally built for "sharing interests and exchanging ideas", according to an announcement at the time.
