科學(xué)家發(fā)現(xiàn)比較大的水下火山爆發(fā)

Scientists claim to have recorded the largest ever underwater volcanic eruption, off the coast of Africa.

科學(xué)家聲明，記錄到了非洲海岸有史以來最大的水下火山噴發(fā)。

The discovery was made after seafloor maps from a research mission revealed a new volcano formation made up of five cubic kilometres of erupted magma, Science magazine reports.

《科學(xué)》雜志報道，通過海底地圖，可以發(fā)現(xiàn)這海底火山已噴出5立方公里巖漿。

The underwater volcano is said to have formed over a period of six months and is 800m high and 5kms wide.

而這座海底火山的生成只用了短短6個月時間，離海底約為0.8公里，直徑為5公里。

The detection came after a strange seismic event in November last year near the island of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Mozambique.For the past 12 months, the 250,000 residents of the French island had been experiencing a series of small earthquakes almost daily, Science magazine reports.

The French government launched a scientific mission in June 2018 involving the ship Marion Dufresne.

“We have never seen anything like this,” Nathalie Feuillet, a lead researcher on the Marion Dufresne and the Institute of Geophysics in Paris told the magazine.

The ship’s sonar detected trails of “bubble-rich” water rising from the volcano. When crew members from the Marion Dufresne combed rocks from the volcano they released high-pressure gas.

“They were popping as we brought them on board,” Feuillet said.

University of Oxford volcanologist Mike Cassidy told Science magazine the underwater volcano is likely to be too deep to cause a tsunami onshore.
