David Solomon has emerged as the favourite to succeed Lloyd Blankfein at the helm of Goldman Sachs after winning a year-long power struggle with his co-president, Harvey Schwartz.

Mr Schwartz, 54, announced his retirement on Monday, leaving the field clear for the 56-year-old Mr Solomon, who hails from the investment banking side of the business. Mr Blankfein and Mr Schwartz rose through Goldman’s commodities trading unit.

Mr Blankfein, 63, recommended to the board last month that Mr Solomon be his successor, according to a person familiar with the conversations.

Mr Solomon and Mr Schwartz had been elevated together in December 2016 to co-president and co-chief operating officer after Gary Cohn, the bank’s previous second-in-command, left to join the White House as the president’s top economic adviser.

At the time of the reshuffle, Mr Blankfein indicated he would stay for at least a couple of years to allow the two contenders to demonstrate their abilities. Mr Solomon, who will continue in the president and chief operating officer role alone, has been seen as a champion of efforts by Goldman to increase lending to its investment banking clients.

Mr Blankfein could stand aside as chief executive as soon as the end of this year or early next year — Goldman’s 150th anniversary — according to people briefed on the board’s thinking.
