Conway is seen perched on her knees on the couch with her feet behind her in photos taken Monday while President Trump met with leaders of historically black colleges and universities.
Some Twitter users were quick to highlight the photo as evidence of a lack of respect for the office from Conway and the Trump administration.
— Rex Huppke (@RexHuppke) February 28, 2017
— George Takei (@GeorgeTakei) February 28, 2017
“I will only be able to get mad at the way Kellyanne Conway sits on a couch if it turns out she's hiding ... Trump's tax returns under her,” “Last Week Tonight” writer Josh Gondelman tweeted.
But others pushed back, noting that an additional photo shows she was simply trying to position herself to snap a picture of the visitors with the president.
“This is the dumbest outrage ever,” one Twitter user commented. Another called the fuss over the photo “exactly the reason people don’t take the media seriously.”
— Ben Dreyfuss (@bendreyfuss) February 28, 2017
“I was asked to take a certain angle [photo] and was doing exactly that. I certainly meant no disrespect, I didn’t mean to have my feet on the couch,” Conway said in an interview.
A couple of weeks earlier, Conway was bashed on social media for using the phrase "alternative facts" during an interview with NBC's Meet the Press on January 22. She uttered the two words while trying to defend press secretary Sean Spicer's false claim that POTUS, 70, had the biggest inauguration crowd in history.
Recently, Conway, 50, urged the public to "go buy" first daughter Ivanka Trump's fashion line during a February 9 appearance on Fox & Friends, raising a debate about ethics violations.
"I bet it’s brand-new information to people that President Obama had a six-month ban on the Iraqi refugee program after two Iraqis came here to this country, were radicalized and they were the masterminds behind the Bowling Green massacre," "Most people don’t know that because it didn’t get covered."
Some online have posted numerous photos of former President Obama resting his feet on the office’s famed Resolute desk at various times during his eight years in office.
As Snopes points out, Obama was far from the only leader to be photographed with his legs propped up, with similar images of Presidents George W. Bush and Gerald Ford likewise existing — and being “unremarked-upon.”
This flap comes just two weeks after a photo of Ivanka Trump sitting in her father’s Oval Office chair raised some eyebrows on Twitter.
