威廉·巴特勒·葉芝（William Butler Yeats），愛爾蘭詩人、劇作家，著名的神秘主義者。葉芝是“愛爾蘭文藝復(fù)興運動”的領(lǐng)袖，也是艾比劇院（Abbey Theatre）的創(chuàng)建者之一。1865年6月13日出生于都柏林。曾在都柏林大都會美術(shù)學院學習繪畫，1887年開始專門從事詩歌創(chuàng)作，被詩人艾略特譽為“當代最偉大的詩人”。

這首詩也被譯為《莎莉花園》，在時態(tài)的運用上也有獨特之處。全詩除了最后半行用現(xiàn)在時態(tài)以外都是過去時態(tài)。這說明過去對人們的現(xiàn)在具有十分重要的意義。在詩的最后，詩人用一般現(xiàn)在時是意味深長的。雖然對現(xiàn)在情況的描述只有五個詞便戛然而止，但是，由于詩人把這幾個詞放在全詩最突出的位置，所以給人意猶未盡的感覺。這首貌似簡單的詩，卻向人們揭示了生活的哲理：對待愛情和生活，人們應(yīng)當順其自然，就像“綠葉長在樹枝上”，“青草長在河堰上”。不然，會因為一時的“愚蠢”而遺恨終生。
