威廉·巴特勒·葉芝(William Butler Yeats),愛爾蘭詩(shī)人、劇作家,著名的神秘主義者。葉芝是“愛爾蘭文藝復(fù)興運(yùn)動(dòng)”的領(lǐng)袖,也是艾比劇院(Abbey Theatre)的創(chuàng)建者之一。1865年6月13日出生于都柏林。曾在都柏林大都會(huì)美術(shù)學(xué)院學(xué)習(xí)繪畫,1887年開始專門從事詩(shī)歌創(chuàng)作,被詩(shī)人艾略特譽(yù)為“當(dāng)代最偉大的詩(shī)人”。
這首詩(shī)也被譯為《莎莉花園》,在時(shí)態(tài)的運(yùn)用上也有獨(dú)特之處。全詩(shī)除了最后半行用現(xiàn)在時(shí)態(tài)以外都是過去時(shí)態(tài)。這說明過去對(duì)人們的現(xiàn)在具有十分重要的意義。在詩(shī)的最后,詩(shī)人用一般現(xiàn)在時(shí)是意味深長(zhǎng)的。雖然對(duì)現(xiàn)在情況的描述只有五個(gè)詞便戛然而止,但是,由于詩(shī)人把這幾個(gè)詞放在全詩(shī)最突出的位置,所以給人意猶未盡的感覺。這首貌似簡(jiǎn)單的詩(shī),卻向人們揭示了生活的哲理:對(duì)待愛情和生活,人們應(yīng)當(dāng)順其自然,就像“綠葉長(zhǎng)在樹枝上”,“青草長(zhǎng)在河堰上”。不然,會(huì)因?yàn)橐粫r(shí)的“愚蠢”而遺恨終生。
