There are many old wells in China but the most famous is in the Beixinqiao area in Beijing. There is no record of when it was built, but there were two reports of strange incidents happened when people tried to pull the iron chain from the well to lock it.

The first time was when Japanese soldiers invaded Beijing. They pulled up the iron chain and saw black water stirring up from the bottom of the well. They also heard the sound of cattle, and felt a sea breeze accompanied by the smell of pale blood. They immediately dropped the iron chain and reopened the well.

During the Eastern Jin Dynasty, a monk discovered this area on his journey to the west and noted, “The lake has many evil spirits and hot winds, those who go deep into the lake cannot get out alive.”

These albino creatures made the area known as the "white animal village". Albino animals are found all over the world, but nowhere near as much as those found in Shennongjia .

There is a legend about the lake that when people stand by the lake and speak loudly, the sky will suddenly become cloudy and rain will begin to fall.
