捕兔陷阱

It was a place of force—
這是武力之地——

The wind gagging my mouth with my own blown hair,

Tearing off my voice, and the sea

Blinding me with its lights, the lives of the dead

Unreeling in it, spreading like oil.

I tasted the malignity of the gorse,

Its black spikes,

The extreme unction of its yellow candle-flowers.

They had an efficiency, a great beauty,

And were extravagant, like torture.

There was only one place to get to.

Simmering, perfumed,

The paths narrowed into the hollow.

And the snares almost effaced themselves—

The absence of shrieks

Made a hole in the hot day, a vacancy.

The glassy light was a clear wall,

The thickets quiet.
灌木叢安靜了。

I felt a still busyness, an intent.
我感到死氣沉沉的忙碌，一種意圖。

I felt hands round a tea mug, dull, blunt,
我感到雙手捂著茶杯，沉悶，麻木，

Ringing the white china.
圍繞著白色陶瓷杯。

How they awaited him, those little deaths!
它們等著他，那些小死神！

They waited like sweethearts. They excited him.
它們好像等待心上人。它們讓他興奮。

And we, too, had a relationship—
而我們，也曾，有過(guò)戀愛(ài)關(guān)系——

Tight wires between us,

Pegs too deep to uproot, and a mind like a ring

Sliding shut on some quick thing,

The constriction killing me also.
