67　other, the other和else

1　other 僅用作形容詞，作定語，不能作表語，泛指“其余的，別的，其他的”，后常接單數(shù)名詞或復(fù)數(shù)名詞。

Other students will stay at school. 別的學生將留在學校里。

What other things can you see? 你還能看到別的什么東西嗎？

Have you any other books in your bag? 你書包里還有別的書嗎？

I'll come again some other day. 我會改日再來。

You can take other tools. 你可以拿別的工具 。

2　the other 作定語用，后跟單數(shù)名詞，是特指兩個東西中的另一個；the other 后跟復(fù)數(shù)名詞時，表示特指的人或物。the other 也可作代詞，單獨作主語或賓語，表示特指的另一個。

This one is red and the other is white. 這個是紅的，另一個是白的。

I can only find one sock. Where is the other one? 我只能找到一只襪子，另外一只在哪兒？

Where are the other students? （正）別的學生在哪里 ？

Where are other students? （誤） （這里“別的學生”為心目中所指的那些學生 ）

Put it in the other hand. （正）把它放在另一只手里。

Put it in your other hand. （正）（the有時可以用形容詞性物主代詞替代）

Put it in other hand. （誤）

Where is the other pen? （正）另外一支鋼筆在哪里？

提示

one...the other表示“一個……另一個”，這種結(jié)構(gòu)只能用the other，不可用other。

One is a boy and the other is a girl. （正）一個是男孩，另一個是女孩。

One is a boy and other is a girl. （誤）

3　else 用作形容詞時，也表示“別的，其他的”，但要用在疑問代詞who, whom, what, which和不定代詞anybody, somebody, everybody, nothing, everything, anything等后面。

Who else is coming? 還有誰要來？

What else did you say to him? 你還對他說了別的什么？

Do you want anything else ? 你還要別的什么嗎？（=any other thing）

Somebody else has seen her. 還有別的人看見了她。

Where else did he go? 他還去了別的什么地方？

I have nothing else to do. （正）我沒有別的事情可做 。

I have no other things to do. （正）

I have nothing other to do. （誤）
