When King Edward came near enough to have a full view of the Scots, he was astonished to see so small a force awaiting on foot,
當(dāng)愛德華國王前進(jìn)到可以看見蘇軍營寨時(shí)，很是詫異。因?yàn)樯侥_下只有一小股部隊(duì)在一個(gè)小平地上駐守，
on a level field, the attack of his mighty army.
以防他的大軍進(jìn)攻。
He could scarce believe it possible.
他幾乎不敢相信這是真的。
"Will you Scotsmen fight?" he asked of Sir Ingram de Umfraville, a veteran leader in his father's wars, who chanced to be at his side.
“你們這些蘇格蘭人會(huì)打仗嗎？”他問英格拉姆·德·烏姆弗雷維爾爵士。烏姆弗雷維爾爵士是國王的父輩時(shí)一個(gè)富有戰(zhàn)爭經(jīng)驗(yàn)的老兵，這次被選派在國王身邊。
"Yea, siccarly, sire," said the knight.
“是的，陛下。”騎士答道。
At this moment the Scots, as their custom was on the edge of battle, all knelt down, and made a short prayer to God.
蘇格蘭人有一個(gè)習(xí)俗，就是在戰(zhàn)爭前夕會(huì)跪下向上帝祈禱一會(huì)。
When the English king saw them kneeling, he cried, "Yon folk kneel to ask mercy." Umfraville answered,
看到他們下跪，英格蘭國王喊道，“你們是在下跪請求我的寬恕嗎？” 烏姆弗雷維爾回答，
"You say truth; they ask mercy, but not of you. Believe me, yon men will win or die."
“您說得對(duì)；他們在請求寬恕，但不是向你。相信我，今天不是你死就是我亡。”
"Be it so," said the king, and immediately ordered the trumpets to sound the charge.
“那就來吧，”英國國王說道，并立刻下令他的士兵吹響沖鋒號(hào)。
The English horse, spurred to full speed, rushed to the shock.
英國騎兵全速前進(jìn)，大地震動(dòng)。
The Scots, with their long spears levelled, stood like a wall.
蘇格蘭士兵則端著長矛嚴(yán)陣以待，像一堵墻。
The crash of their meeting and the breaking of spears could be heard far off.
兩軍相接，折戟的聲音傳得很遠(yuǎn)。
Many a good horse fell, and threw its rider to the earth.
很多好馬倒下了，馬背上的人也被甩到了地上。
Many a bold rider, unable to recover himself, was slain on the ground.
很多勇敢的騎兵還來不及反應(yīng)，就被殺死在地上。
The ranks behind came dashing on.
后面的人源源不斷涌上前。
Their horses either fell dead from deep spear wounds, or, stabbed and maddened,
他們的戰(zhàn)馬要么被長矛殺死，要么被刺中驚慌地跳起又落下，
they reared and recoiled, and rushed masterless, with blood-streaming breasts, spreading disorder among the advancing squadrons.
將騎手摔在地上，胸口被鮮血染紅，隨后跑開，將正在前進(jìn)的英軍沖得潰不成軍。
Randolph now came up with his division and attacked the English.
這時(shí)，埋伏著的倫道夫殺出，沖向英軍。與英軍相比，
So small, in comparison, was his force, that they seemed to be lost in the crowd, as if they had plunged into a sea of steel.
蘇軍人數(shù)少得多，以致于讓人覺得他們會(huì)被英軍士兵淹沒，好像進(jìn)入了一片鋼鐵的海洋。
The third division of the Scots also closed, and the battle was presently general along the whole front.
蘇軍第三分隊(duì)也在逼近，現(xiàn)在基本上就是面對(duì)面作戰(zhàn)。
