It is hidden from the prying eyes of the forest robbers; and here the young brood are hatched in safety.

縫葉鶯的巢隱藏地很好，成功的避開了森林里強(qiáng)盜的窺視；在這里，雛鳥安全地孵化出來。

You may see them put out their heads when they are expecting their mother back with an insect or a worm for their food.

當(dāng)雛鳥們期盼鳥媽媽嘴里叼著小蟲飛回來，喂它們美食時(shí)，它們就會(huì)從巢中伸出小腦袋。

But at the slightest sound of danger, in they draw them,

但即便是最輕微的危險(xiǎn)聲響，它們都會(huì)立刻縮進(jìn)去，

and then there seems to be nothing but the leaf hanging with the other leaves upon the bough.

好像什么都沒有了，就只有懸掛在枝頭的這片樹葉和其它葉子。

Another little bird, called the Indian sparrow, is equally ingenious.

另一類小鳥叫做印度麻雀，同樣很有創(chuàng)造性。

She builds her nest on the highest tree she can find, and if it overhangs a river so much the better.

它把窩筑在能找到的最高的樹上，如果鳥窩能高懸于河上，那就更好了。

She makes it of grass, which she weaves like cloth, and fashions it into the shape of a bottle.

鳥窩以青草為材料，印度麻雀把這些青草像布料一樣編織在一起，呈瓶子狀，時(shí)尚又漂亮。

It contains several apartments, and the entrance is at the bottom.

這樣的鳥窩建有幾層寓所，入口處就在瓶子的底部。

The oddest thing about this nest is, that the bird is said to light up her rooms with fire-flies,

關(guān)于這種鳥巢最奇特的地方是，據(jù)說鳥兒會(huì)用黏土把螢火蟲粘在鳥窩的壁上，

which she sticks to the walls by pieces of clay!

這樣螢火蟲就能照亮各個(gè)房間了。

One naturalist thinks she must bring them home for food;

一個(gè)博物學(xué)家認(rèn)為，印度麻雀一定是把螢火蟲帶回家當(dāng)做美餐；

and another supposes that she places them there to dazzle the eyes of the bats,

另一種假設(shè)是，它將熠熠閃光的螢火蟲放在那里，讓夜間捕食的蝙蝠眼花繚亂，

that would gladly prey upon her young ones if they could.

以防止蝙蝠們捕食它的雛鳥。
