I rapidly threw on my clothes and was ready in a few minutes to accompany my friend down to the sitting-room.

我匆匆地穿上衣服，幾分鐘后就準(zhǔn)備就緒，隨同我的朋友來到樓下的起居室。

A lady dressed in black and heavily veiled, who had been sitting in the window, rose as we entered.

一位女士端坐窗前，她身穿黑色衣服，蒙著厚厚的面紗。她在我們走進房間時站起身來。

這位是我的摯友和伙伴華生醫(yī)生。在他面前，你可以象在我面前一樣地談話，不必顧慮。

Ha! I am glad to see that Mrs. Hudson has had the good sense to light the fire.

哈！赫德森太太想得很周到，我很高興看到她已經(jīng)燒旺了壁爐。

Pray draw up to it, and I shall order you a cup of hot coffee, for I observe that you are shivering."

請湊近爐火坐坐，我叫人給你端一杯熱咖啡，我看你在發(fā)抖。"

"It is not cold which makes me shiver," said the woman in a low voice, changing her seat as requested.

"我不是因為覺得冷才發(fā)抖的，"那個女人低聲地說，同時，她按照福爾摩斯的請求換了個座位。

"What, then?" "It is fear, Mr. Holmes. It is terror."

"那么，是為什么呢？""福爾摩斯先生，是因為害怕和感到恐懼。"

She raised her veil as she spoke, and we could see that she was indeed in a pitiable state of agitation,

她一邊說著，一邊掀起了面紗，我們能夠看出，她確實是處于萬分焦慮之中，引人憐憫，

her face all drawn and gray, with restless, frightened eyes, like those of some hunted animal.

她臉色蒼白，神情沮喪，雙眸驚惶不安，酷似一頭被追逐的動物的眼睛。

Her features and figure were those of a woman of thirty,

她的身材相貌象是三十歲模樣，

but her hair was shot with premature gray, and her expression was weary and haggard.

可是，她的頭發(fā)卻未老先衰夾雜著幾根銀絲，表情萎靡憔悴。
