I was at the station when the message arrived. What d'you think the man died of?"

"Oh, this is hardly a case for me to theorize over," said Holmes dryly.

"No, no. Still, we can't deny that you hit the nail on the head sometimes.

Dear me! Door locked, I understand. Jewels worth half a million missing. How was the window?"

可是據(jù)我了解，門是鎖著的，五十萬鎊的寶物丟失啦。窗戶的情形怎么樣呢？"

"Fastened; but there are steps on the sill."

"關(guān)得很牢，不過窗臺上有腳印。"

"Well, well, if it was fastened the steps could have nothing to do with the matter. That's common sense.

"好啦，好啦。如果窗戶是關(guān)著的，這腳印就與本案無關(guān)了，這是常識。

Man might have died in a fit; but then the jewels are missing.

這個人也許是在盛怒之下死的，可是珠寶又遺失了。

Ha! I have a theory. These flashes come upon me at times.

哈！我有了一個解釋。有時我也常能靈機一動呢。

Just step outside, Sergeant, and you, Mr. Sholto. Your friend can remain.

Sholto was, on his own confession, with his brother last night.

這個塞笛厄斯曾和他哥哥在一起，哥倆有過爭吵，這是我們知道的。

No one saw the brother from the time Thaddeus left him. His bed had not been slept in.

Thaddeus is evidently in a most disturbed state of mind. His appearance is –well, not attractive.

"This splinter of wood, which I have every reason to believe to be poisoned, was in the man's scalp where you still see the mark;
