Our guide had left us the lantern.

Holmes swung it slowly round and peered keenly at the house and at the great rubbish-heaps which cumbered the grounds.
福爾摩斯提著它，緩緩地、認真細致地查看著房子的四周和堆積在空地上的大堆垃圾。
Miss Morstan and I stood together, and her hand was in mine.
摩斯坦小姐和我站在一起，她的手緊握在我的手里。
A wondrous subtle thing is love, for here were we two, who had never seen each other before that day,
愛情真是一件不可思議的事情。我們兩人在前一天還沒有見過面，
between whom no word or even look of affection had ever passed,
今天雙方也沒有說過一句情話，
and yet now in an hour of trouble our hands instinctively sought for each other.

I have marvelled at it since,

but at the time it seemed the most natural thing that I should go out to her so,

我只在白拉萊特附近的山邊看見過相同的景象，當時探礦的正在那里鉆探。"
"And from the same cause," said Holmes. "These are the traces of the treasure-seekers.
福爾摩斯道："這里也是經(jīng)過多次的挖掘啊，留下了尋找寶物的痕跡。
You must remember that they were six years looking for it.
你不要忘記，他們費了六年的工夫來尋找。
No wonder that the grounds look like a gravel-pit."
無怪乎這塊地好象砂礫坑一樣。"
At that moment the door of the house burst open, and Thaddeus Sholto came running out,
這時候房門忽然敞開，塞笛厄斯·舒爾托向外跑出，
with his hands thrown forward and terror in his eyes.
兩手向前，眼神里充滿了恐懼。
"There is something amiss with Bartholomew!" he cried.
他叫道："巴索洛謬一定出了事兒了！
"I am frightened! My nerves cannot stand it."
怕死我了！我的神經(jīng)受不了這樣的刺激。"
He was, indeed, half blubbering with fear,
他確是萬分恐懼。
and his twitching, feeble face peeping out from the great astrakhan collar had the helpless,
在他那從羔皮大領(lǐng)子里露出來的、痙攣的、沒有血色的臉上，
appealing expression of a terrified child.
表情就象一個驚駭失措奔，逃求救的小孩子一樣。
"Come into the house," said Holmes in his crisp, firm way.
福爾摩斯堅決、干脆地說道："咱們進屋里去。"
"Yes, do!" pleaded Thaddeus Sholto. "I really do not feel equal to giving directions."
塞笛厄斯懇求道："請進去！請進去！我真不知如何是好了！"
