Clearly the murderer had used it to remind his victim of some dead or absent woman.

很明顯，兇手曾經(jīng)利用這只指環(huán)使被害者回憶起某個已死的、或者是不在場的女人。

It was at this point that I asked Gregson

that the blood which covered the floor had burst from the murderer's nose in his excitement.

I could perceive that the track of blood coincided with the track of his feet.

It is seldom that any man, unless he is very full-blooded, breaks out in this way through emotion,

so I hazarded the opinion that the criminal was probably a robust and ruddy- faced man.

The answer was conclusive.

It told me that Drebber had already applied for the protection of the law against an old rival in love, named Jefferson Hope,

電報中說，錐伯曾經(jīng)指控過一個叫做杰弗遜·侯波的舊日情敵，并且請求過法律保護(hù)，

and that this same Hope was at present in Europe.

這個侯波目前正在歐洲。

I knew now that I held the clue to the mystery in my hand,

我當(dāng)時就知道了，我已經(jīng)掌握了這個秘密案件的線索了。

and all that remained was to secure the murderer.

剩下要做的就只是穩(wěn)穩(wěn)地捉住兇手了。
