第二十一課 驢子的故事

Poor donkey!

可憐的小毛驢??！

I'll give him a handful of grass;

只要給它一把草，

I'm sure he's an honest, though stupid, old ass.

老實(shí)、忠厚且上了年級的笨毛驢。

He trots to the market to carry the sack, And lets me ride all the way home on his back;

就會(huì)興沖沖的跑去馱麻袋,并一路載著我回家。

And only just stops by the ditch for a minute, To seeif there's any fresh grass for him in it.

路上遇到溝槽時(shí)，它會(huì)稍作停頓看看里面是否有新鮮的草；

It's true, now and then, he has got a bad trick of standing stock-still, and just trying to kick;

當(dāng)然了，有時(shí)它會(huì)故意停下不走，要不然就只踢一下腿。

But then, poor old fellow! you know he can't tell. That standing stock-still is not using me well;

我那可憐的毛驢不會(huì)說話，但它的所作所為我絲毫不為所動(dòng)。

For it never comes into his head, I dare say, To do his work first, and then afterwards play. No, no, my good donkey, I'll give you some grass, For you know no better, because you're an ass;

驢子從來不會(huì)想著先把手頭兒的活兒干完再玩的，所以我扔給它一把草，沒什么比這更好的了，因?yàn)樗皇莻€(gè)毛驢。

But what little donkeys some children must look, Who stand, very like you, stock-still at their book, And waste every moment of time as it passes— A great deal more stupid and silly than asses!

但是現(xiàn)實(shí)生活中有多少孩子一動(dòng)不動(dòng)地坐在書本前，等待時(shí)間一點(diǎn)一滴地流逝，這種行為比起驢子有過之而無不及。
