英語早間課堂:教您一招說金錢(3)

資本主義社會奉信金錢萬能(money talks)，他們認(rèn)為私人財產(chǎn)是神圣不可侵犯的。而社會主義社會崇尚精神領(lǐng)域的東西，倡導(dǎo)崇高的道德標(biāo)準(zhǔn)，比如要以己奉公，誠信，可靠，說話算數(shù)。那么“說話算數(shù)”用地道美語怎么說呢?這正是我今天要拋出的說“金錢”的招。

我們就先來聽2個例子：

拋招-1：Jack, you're talking big about how great your team is and how bad they'll beat my team Saturday. Okay, let's bet fifty dollars on who wins. Let's see you put your money where your mouth is!

注釋1：talk big：吹牛，說大話 talk big about：吹牛說.....，說......的大話

Eg . He loved to talk big and brag about a variety of things to other people. 他喜歡說大話，很多事情都喜歡跟人亂掰一通。

Eg . Tybalt likes to talk big and wouldn't stand a chance against Romeo! 提伯特喜歡說大話，他絕不是羅密歐的對手!

注釋2：bet some money on sth：用多少錢做打賭......

Eg. I will bet 100 dollars on getting through the final exams this term. 我敢用100元來打賭我這個學(xué)期期末考試可以及格。

(譯：杰克，你說了那末多大話，說你們球隊有多好，他們星期六會如何把我的球隊打得慘敗。行，我們拿五十塊錢來打賭，看看到底誰贏。讓我們來看看你的話到底是不是確實(shí)。)

拋招-2：The governor of our State talks about the need to improve public education but puts no money where his mouth is. He simply uses education as a reason to raise taxes but he never intends to spend money on it.

注釋1：public education：公共教育 use... as：利用......作為 raise tax：增加稅收 spend some money on sth：把錢花在......

注釋2：put no money where one's mouth is：說話不算數(shù)，沒有實(shí)際行動

Eg . If you put money where your mouth is this time, it is hard to make me buy your story again. 如果你這次說話不算數(shù)，那么再要讓我相信你很難了。

(譯：我們州的州長老是說有必要改進(jìn)公共教育，但是在這方面并沒有實(shí)際行動。他只是利用教育作為增加稅收的理由，但是從來也沒有把錢用在教育工作上的意圖。)

接招：上面的2個例句中都用到了同一個詞語：put one's money where one's mouth is。這是一條動詞性習(xí)慣用語。從字面上看，這個語的意思是把某人的錢放在他的嘴邊。我們知道，人們常用錢來打賭表示肯定會做某事, 如果你告訴別人你能做某事或你相信某事，那么一個好辦法就是用錢作賭注，表示你支持自己的說法，讓別人相信自己。這個習(xí)語的意思正是來自于此種概念，意思是“說話算話，許下的話要算數(shù)，用行動支持你的說法。注意，這個習(xí)語特別是指某人采取實(shí)際行動來完成曾經(jīng)許諾過的。其英文解釋是這樣的：The idiom is used to show one’s support for what you say or something that you really believe through your actions, rather than just one’s words.

名著Life 中就有這么一句話：The daughter usually reacts by bringing home a series of unsuitable males to see if Daddy will put his money where his mouth is.女兒通常會把好幾個不合適的男子帶回家，看看爸爸是否會說話算數(shù)。

下面我們再來看2個例句來熟悉這個習(xí)語的意思以及看這個習(xí)語的運(yùn)用。

The governor agreed with our plan, but till now he hasn’t put his money where his mouth is.

這位政府官員同意了我們的計劃，但直到現(xiàn)在他還沒有說話算數(shù)。

Now that you have promised that you would go exercising every day, it is now the time to put your money where your mouth is. Let's go!
