We've learnt many ways to tell people to stop talking recently. Today let's have a summary.

1 Just keep it down. 安靜點兒。

2 Shut your mouth. 閉嘴。

【主題】

Today I would like to share an new expression with you which means " Don't tell anyone. " It's said when there is a secret to be kept. What's it? Let's listen to a simple situational dialogue and find it .

A : I heard Beth's surprise birthday party is on Sunday. B : Keep your mouth shut about that. I don't want her to find out.

【答疑解惑】

It is " keep your mouth shut. " 在這個短語中，keep 是使役動詞，your mouth 是做keep的賓語，shut 是動詞 shut 的過去分詞，在這里作為形容詞，做賓語的補足語。這個結構就是 keep + 名詞+ 形容詞，這個結構就是跟 make + 名詞 + 形容詞的意思是一樣的。保持你的嘴巴是關著的，那意思就是“這是秘密， 跟任何人都不要說。”If we want to express " 對某事或某人要保密 "， it is " keep your mouth shut about something or somebody. "【即學即用】

In this sentence , "open" means "make something public". "Understood?" is an elliptical sentence. The whole sentence of it is :" are you understood?" we have a very familiar sentence which is "Do you understand?" The translation of them are the same. And then what's the differences between them. 本句中Understood? 是個省略句，完整的句子是“Are you understood?”用的是被動語態(tài)，而我們在熟悉不過的一個句子，“Do you understand?”用的是主動語態(tài)，可是中文翻譯是一樣的。但是這使用的場景就不同了。Are you understood? 這句話含有“你給我聽清楚了嗎?”“你給我弄明白了嗎?”這就含有訓斥別人的意味在里面。而 Do you understand? 就是一般的口吻問別人明白某樣東西沒有。因此，要注意語態(tài)的正確運用，使用錯了，可會引起誤會和矛盾。

We should pay attention to the following places. 1 Beth's surprise[ beθs] [[s?'praiz]

Beth's的發(fā)音尾音為[s], 跟 surprise的第一個音相同，因此，這個尾音就不發(fā)出來了，那么Beth的尾音是[θ], 這個讀音又和surprise 的第一個音相式，因此[θ]這個音也要保持沉默。So it should be pronounced as [bes?'praiz].

2 is on [iz] [?n]

這里is 以輔音[z]結尾，on 以元音[?]開頭，前面的輔音跟后面的元音進行連讀就是[iz?n]. There is not any stress falling on the two syllables .

3 shut about that [??t] [?'baut] [e?t]

Shut 以清輔音而且是爆破音[t]結尾, about 是以元音[?]開頭，前一個單詞的英標為輔音，后一個單詞的開頭音標是元音，則這個輔音跟這個元音進行連讀，就是[t?], 清輔音在元音前濁化為濁輔音，就讀為[d?], about是以[t]結尾，[t]在輔音[e]前不發(fā)音，因此shut about that 就讀為['??d?bau'e?t]. The stresses falls on the first and third syllable.

4 want her to find out To 在美語中的發(fā)音是[d?], find 以輔音[d]結尾，out 以雙元音[au]開頭，根據(jù)連讀規(guī)則，將其進行連讀，就是['faindaut].

【關鍵句講解】

There are two sentences in this dialogue, being worth polishing them. 1 I heard Beth's surprise birthday party is on Sunday. 【翻譯】我聽說Beth的令人驚喜的生日晚會定于周日進行。

【要點】surprise 這里是名詞作定語，可以改為surprising.

2 I don't want her to find out. 【翻譯】我不想讓他知道。

【要點】to find out 是動詞不定式做賓語her的補足語。In this sentence, it means "know".意思是知道。 For example: We must find out the customs of other countries, so that they will not think us ill mannered. 我們必須知道別的國家的習俗，免得他們會認為我們是沒有禮貌的。Another sentences is :Find out what the conditions of the contract are. 弄清楚合同的條件是什么。Here it means "make something certain". 意思是：弄清楚。We have another sentence: I shall make it my business to find out who is responsible. 我要查出是誰的責任. In this sentence , it means "get the answer by examination". 意思是：查明，找出。If the boss should find out about this, heads will roll. 萬一被老板發(fā)現(xiàn)，飯碗可就保不住了。在這句話中，意思是：發(fā)現(xiàn)。
