什么是愛(ài)
A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home from the war. He called his parents from San Francisco.
這是一個(gè)最終從戰(zhàn)場(chǎng)歸來(lái)的士兵的故事。他從舊金山打電話給他的父母：
"Mom and Dad, I'm coming home, but I've a favor to ask. I have a friend I'd like to bring home with me."
“爸爸媽媽?zhuān)一貋?lái)了，可是我有個(gè)請(qǐng)求。我想帶一個(gè)朋友和我一起回家。”
"Sure!" they replied, "We'd love to meet him"
“當(dāng)然好啊!”他們回答，“我們會(huì)很高興見(jiàn)到他的。”
"There's something you should know, the son continued, he was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. "He stepped on a land mine and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come live with us."
“有些事情你們應(yīng)該了解到，”兒子又繼續(xù)說(shuō)道，“他在戰(zhàn)場(chǎng)上受了重傷。由于踩到了地雷，他失去了一只胳膊和一條腿，他現(xiàn)在沒(méi)地方可去，我想請(qǐng)他和我們一起生活。”
"I'm sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live."
“兒子，聽(tīng)到那個(gè)我很難過(guò)，或許我們可以幫他找個(gè)安身之處。”
"No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us."
“不行，爸爸媽媽?zhuān)蚁胱屗臀覀円黄鹕睢?rdquo;
"Son," said the father, "you don't know what you're asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden on us. We have our own lives to live, and we can't let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He'll find a way to live on his own."
“兒子，”父親又接著說(shuō)，“你不知道自己在說(shuō)些什么。像他這樣的殘疾人會(huì)對(duì)我們的生活造成很大的負(fù)擔(dān)。我們還要過(guò)自己的生活，不能讓這樣的事情干擾我們的生活。我認(rèn)為你應(yīng)該先回家然后忘了他，他會(huì)找到自己的一片天空的。”
At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him.
就在此時(shí)兒子掛斷了電話，他的父母再也沒(méi)有他的消息了。
A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building, they were told. The police believed it was suicide. The grief-stricken parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the city morgue to identify the body of their son.
然而幾天后，他們接到了舊金山的警察打來(lái)的電話，被告知他們兒子已經(jīng)墜樓身亡了。警方相信這是一起自殺案件。于是這對(duì)傷心欲絕的父母飛往舊金山，被帶到停尸間去辨認(rèn)兒子的遺體。
They recognized him, but to their horror, they also discovered something they didn't know, their son had only one arm and one leg.
他們認(rèn)出了自己的兒子，但令他們感到驚駭?shù)氖?，他們發(fā)現(xiàn)了之前不知道的一些事情：他們的兒子居然只有一只胳臂和一條腿。
