On his way, he passed a house, about which there was a crowd.

在路上，他路過(guò)一幢房子，只見(jiàn)一群人在那兒圍觀。

He drew nigh, asked what was going on, and received for an answer, that there was to be a sale of many specimens of art, collected by an amateur in the course of thirty years.

他氣喘吁吁地問(wèn)出了什么事情，有人告訴他說(shuō)，里面售賣許多藝術(shù)品，是一位藏家歷經(jīng)三十年收集之大成。

It has often happened that collections made with infinite pains by the proprietor, have been sold without mercy or discrimination after his death.

經(jīng)常有這種事情，藏家付出很大心血收集的藏品，在他身故后被無(wú)情地拍賣，其中的精品也被不加區(qū)分地賤賣了。

Something whispered to the weary Duhobret, that here would be the market for his picture.

有人對(duì)虛弱不堪的杜霍布賴特小聲說(shuō)，他的這幅畫會(huì)碰到識(shí)貨的買家的。

It was a long way yet to the house of the picture dealer, and he made up his mind at once.

這兒離那位畫商的店還有長(zhǎng)長(zhǎng)的一段路，聽(tīng)別人這么講他馬上鼓足勇氣。

He worked his way through the crowd, dragged himself up the steps, and, after many inquiries, found the auctioneer.

他穿過(guò)人群，拖著沉重的雙腿上了臺(tái)階，多方打聽(tīng)后才找到那位拍賣商。

That personage was a busy man, with a handful of papers;

那人很忙，手里拿著好幾張畫，

he was inclined to notice somewhat roughly the interruption of the lean, sallow hunchback, imploring as were his gesture and language.

他高興地注意到這位消瘦、略微有些駝背說(shuō)話吞吞吐吐，于是用手勢(shì)和言語(yǔ)來(lái)試探他。

"What do you call your picture?" at length, said he, carefully looking at it.

“你怎么看你的畫?”他終于開(kāi)口道，仔細(xì)打量這幅畫。

"It is a view of the Abbey of Newburg, with its village and the surrounding landscape," replied the eager and trembling artist.

“畫的是紐伯格修道院，背景是所在的村莊和周圍的景色。”這位急切的藝術(shù)家連忙說(shuō)，聲音有些顫抖。

The auctioneer again scanned it contemptuously, and asked what it was worth.

這位拍賣商又輕蔑地瞥了一眼畫作，試探著問(wèn)他打算賣多少錢。
