Her pride will be less wounded by submitting to that course of things, which now predestinates our independence,

倘若英國順其自然，美國獨立在所難免，大英帝國顏面多少得以保留；

than by yielding the points in controversy to her rebellious subjects.

倘若英國在雙方論戰(zhàn)中屈從它的反叛者論點，情況將有所不同。

The former, she would regard as the result of fortune; the latter, she would feel as her own deep disgrace.

前者，英國認(rèn)為原本會有幸運的結(jié)局；后者，它將為此深感羞辱。

Why, then, do we not change this from a civil to a national war?

既然如此，我們?yōu)楹尾粚⑦@場內(nèi)戰(zhàn)改為民族之戰(zhàn)？

And since we must fight it through, why not put ourselves in a state to enjoy all the benefits of victory, if we gain the victory.

If we fail, it can be no worse for us. But we shall not fail.

如果我們遭受失敗，對我們來說，境況絕不會更糟，然而我們不應(yīng)該失敗。

The cause will raise up armies; the cause will create navies.

The people—the people, if we are true to them, will carry us, and will carry themselves, gloriously through this struggle.

假如我們真心對待民眾，民眾將支持我們，其實質(zhì)就是支持他們自己，并通過戰(zhàn)斗取得榮耀。

I care not how fickle other people have been found. I know the people of these colonies;

我不介意有些人總是善變無常，我了解殖民地民眾；

and I know that resistance to British aggression is deep and settled in their hearts, and can not be eradicated.

Sir, the Declaration of Independence will inspire the people with increased courage.

先生們，《獨立宣言》將鼓舞民眾獲得勇氣。

Instead of a long and bloody war for the restoration of privileges, for redress of grievances, for chartered immunities,

這場長期流血的戰(zhàn)爭并非旨在恢復(fù)某些特權(quán)，并非為社會不公抱怨或改錯糾偏，

held under a British king, set before them the glorious object of entire independence, and it will breathe into them anew the spirit of life.

并非為獲取大英國王屬下控制的特許豁免權(quán)，這是一項徹底獨立的宏圖大業(yè)，鋪展在美國民眾面前，并將為其生命注入嶄新靈魂的明天。
