It did depend on one, indeed:
勝利，的確依賴優(yōu)異個體，
Behold him! Arnold Winkelried!
看！ 阿諾德.里德激戰(zhàn)那里！
There sounds not to the trump of fame The echo of a nobler name.
聽起來，原非什么顯赫背景，風(fēng)中傳揚(yáng)，一個高山仰止的名字，
Unmarked he stood amid the throng,
回首往事，沉思漫長犀利，
In rumination deep and long,
擁擠人群里，他默默無人注意，
Till you might see with sudden grace,
或許，突然間他的魅力四射，
The very thought come o'er his face;
電花火石，臉上閃爍睿智，
And by the motion of his form:
他英勇善戰(zhàn)，預(yù)測戰(zhàn)局的進(jìn)展，
Anticipate the bursting storm;
他雙眉堅毅，運籌帷幄的指揮，
And by the uplifting of his brow,
他告訴士兵，如何放弩攻擊，
Tell where the bolt would strike, and how.
橫掃入侵者，千軍風(fēng)卷殘云。
But't was no sooner thought than done;
電閃雷鳴，不過轉(zhuǎn)瞬之間，
The field was in a moment won.
陣地上，勝利的旗幟隨風(fēng)飄揚(yáng)。
“Make way for Liberty!” he CRIed:
“請給自由讓路！”他高聲叫道。
Then ran, with arms extended wide,
奔跑中，他伸開無窮寬闊的臂膀，
As if his dearest friend to clasp;
哪怕，與親密的朋友擁抱握手，
Ten spears he swept within his grasp:
鐵肩橫掃，亦能抓過眾多矛槍。
“Make way for Liberty!” he CRIed,
“請給自由讓路！”聲音繼續(xù)回響，
Their keen points met from side to side;
槍尖銳利，嚴(yán)陣以待的對壘雙方，
He bowed among them like a tree,
他躬身如巨椽，佇立士兵中間，
And thus made way for Liberty.
力拔千鈞，為獲取自由疾奔。
Swift to the breach his comrades fly;
進(jìn)軍神速，士兵們英勇異常，
"Make way for Liberty!" they cry,
“請給自由讓路！”眾人異口同聲，
And through the Austrian phalanx dart,
他們呼嘯著，沖進(jìn)奧匈軍隊，
As rushed the spears through Arnold's heart;
疾馳飛鏢，刺中阿諾德的心臟，
While instantaneous as his fall,
他猝然倒下，倒在那片深情土地。
Rout, ruin, panic, scattered all.
潰敗毀滅恐慌，不斷蔓延滋長，
An earthquake could not overthrow a city with a surer blow.
即使天崩地裂，亦無法讓普羅大眾，如此黯然神傷。
Thus Switzerland again was free,
瑞士人，終于重獲民族解放，
Thus Death made way for Liberty!
死亡，畢竟為自由敞開道路！
