As the train was going into the depot,

當(dāng)火車(chē)駛?cè)胲?chē)站后，

I placed myself on the platform of the car in front of the one in which I had been riding, and opposite the stranger,

我下了車(chē)，站在我剛坐的那列火車(chē)臥鋪車(chē)廂前面月臺(tái)上，與那位陌生人對(duì)面相望。

who, with a portmanteau in each hand, was standing on the lowest step, ready to jump to the ground.

他一手拎一件行李箱，站在最下一層車(chē)廂階梯，正欲跳到地上。

I looked from his face to the faces of the people before us, but saw no sign of recognition.

我的目光從他的臉龐，再移到我們之間人群的臉上，一切安然正常。

Suddenly he CRIed, “There they are!”

他冷不丁地高喊：“他們?cè)谀牵?rdquo;

Then he laughed outright, but in a hysterical way, as he looked over the crowd in front of him.

巡脧著前方人群，他忽然大笑起來(lái)，簡(jiǎn)直有點(diǎn)歇斯底里地狂笑。

I followed his eye and saw, some distance back,

我隨著他的目光這才看見(jiàn)，一段距離開(kāi)外，

as if crowded out by the well-dressed and elbowing throng, a little woman in a faded dress and a well-worn hat,

站著一位矮小女子，衣著一身破舊衣衫，頭上帽子齷齪不堪，那女子被周?chē)轮A麗的人流推搡著，

with a face almost painful in its intense but hopeful expression, glancing rapidly from window to window as the coaches passed by.

那張?jiān)诰o張與渴望交集中幾乎痛苦變形的臉，急速?gòu)埻且还?jié)節(jié)駛過(guò)的車(chē)廂。

She had not seen the stranger, but a moment after she caught his eye.

她沒(méi)有看到那位陌生人，但很快，他終于看見(jiàn)她了，

In another instant he had jumped to the platform with his two portmanteaus,

他頓時(shí)跳下車(chē)，手里還提著兩個(gè)皮箱，

and, pushing his way through the crowd, he rushed towards the place where she was standing.

一路拼命地穿過(guò)擁擠的人群跑向站臺(tái)，他沖向她站立的地方。

I think I never saw a face assume so many different expressions in so short a time as did that of the little woman while her husband was on his way to meet her.

當(dāng)丈夫一路跑去，妻子臉上霎時(shí)出現(xiàn)繁雜難言的表情，我還從未見(jiàn)過(guò)這種場(chǎng)面。

She was not pretty,—on the contrary, she was very plain-looking;

她不漂亮——相反，她的姿色實(shí)在庸常，

but somehow I felt a big lump rise in my throat as I watched her.

但不知怎么，看著她，我心中哽咽異常。
