A gentleman who had traveled in Europe, relates that he one day visited the hospital of Berlin, where he saw a man whose exterior was very striking.

一位紳士曾去歐洲旅行，有一天，他去參觀柏林一家醫(yī)院。在醫(yī)院里，他遇見(jiàn)一位男人，那人看上去令人吃驚。

His figure, tall and commanding, was bending with age, but more with sorrow;

他身材高大，器宇軒昂，由于上了年紀(jì)，腰也弓了，臉上滿是悲傷，

the few scattered hairs which remained on his temples were white almost as the driven snow, and the deepest melancholy was depicted in his countenance.

鬢角殘留些許灰白頭發(fā)，像被碾壓的路旁積雪，面孔上刻著深藏的憂郁。

On inquiring who he was and what brought him there,

我詢問(wèn)他的身世，詢問(wèn)他如何這般模樣。

he started, as if from sleep, and, after looking around him, began with slow and measured steps to stride the hall,

他仿佛從夢(mèng)中醒來(lái)，環(huán)顧一下四周，開(kāi)始緩慢卻不失標(biāo)準(zhǔn)地在醫(yī)院門廳前后踱步，

repeating in a low but audible voice, "Once one is two; once one is two."

嘴里還不停嘟噥，聲音很小，但還算清晰：“一一得二，一一得二”。

Now and then he would stop, and remain with his arms folded on his breast as if in contemplation, for some minutes;

他時(shí)而停下，胳膊交叉胸前，似乎陷入一陣冥思祈禱，過(guò)了一會(huì)兒，

then again resuming his walk, he continued to repeat, "Once one is two; once one is two."

又繼續(xù)走動(dòng)起來(lái)，嘴里依然重復(fù)：“一一得二，一一得二。”
