Within hours of taking office as Britain's new prime minister, Boris Johnson has carried out a major clearout of ministers who served under his predecessor. More than half either resigned or been sacked, leaving a cabinet more likely to support no deal Brexit, if an agreement can't be reached with the EU. Mr.Johnson has promised that Britain will leave the bloc at the end of October, come what may.

Scientists in the United States said the speed and extent of the current period of global warming exceeds any similar event in the past 2000 years. The researchers created a reconstruction of average temperatures on all continents and major ocean basins over two millennia.

South Korea's military says North Korea has fired an unidentified projectile. It said the object was fired from an area near Wonsan on North Korea's eastern coast.
