And what I have got is this rope and this old trap. 我有一根繩子 一個(gè)舊的捕獸器

But I know for sure I've not got enough rope to reach 60-plus foot down there. 但是我的繩子不夠長(zhǎng) 我沒法靠它下到60多英尺下的地方

But there is probably enough to reach across to just the other side of this gully,and that's probably only about 30 foot. 但是到這個(gè)峽谷的對(duì)面 應(yīng)該是夠了 估計(jì)就只有30英尺遠(yuǎn)

I can improvise some sort of throwing device here, you know,like a grappling hook, out of this,and get it across to that. 我可以臨時(shí)做一個(gè) 可以扔過去的東西 就有點(diǎn)像 有點(diǎn)像爪鉤之類的東西 然后把它扔到對(duì)面去

Their sailors used them during ship-to-ship battles,thrown into the enemy's rigging,that drag them closer before boarding. 在兩艘船近距離作戰(zhàn)時(shí) 水手會(huì)把爪鉤 扔到敵船的纜繩上 然后把敵船拖過來 以方便本方強(qiáng)行登船

Now I've got two foot stirrups from the trap. 我從這個(gè)捕獸器上 弄下來兩個(gè)鐙子

I'm gonna just put these together,and then.splice them.through that. 把它們這樣交叉放一塊 然后 像那樣 把繩子拴好

That will make,like a pretty rough-and-ready, rudimentary grappling hook. 這樣就能做出 一個(gè)雖然粗糙但基本能用的 爪鉤

Gonna splice them like this-- an old naval technique,and the reason it's good is it's not only stronger, the knots.It also uses up less rope. 像這樣綁起來 船員常用這種古老的方法打結(jié) 這樣做的理由是 這種結(jié)不僅結(jié)實(shí) 而且也不費(fèi)繩子

Finally, follow the pattern of the rope back on itself.Okay, let's see if we can get this thing across. 最后 順著繩子的紋路系緊就行了 我們來看看能不能把這個(gè)東西扔過去

But throwing a rope across a 30-foot canyon is never easy. 但是要把繩子扔過30英尺寬的峽谷并不簡(jiǎn)單

The danger here is throwing yourself over the edge along with the rope, 這時(shí)最危險(xiǎn)的就是 把自己跟繩子一起扔了出去

so make sure you've got a strong footing and keep your feet clear of the coils. 所以一定要站穩(wěn) 腳邊不要放繩子
