24.4　定語的位置

24.4.1　定語通常的位置

1) 單詞定語一般放在所修飾的詞前面（這和漢語一樣）：

　　financial problems 財政問題 　　peaceful construction 和平建設(shè)

　　life insurance 人壽保險 　　trade deficit 貿(mào)易逆差

　　developing countries 發(fā)展中國家 　　living conditions 生活條件

由副詞表示的定語通常放在所修飾詞后面：

The situation here is highly explosive. 這里的局勢具有高度的爆發(fā)性。

The people there are very friendly. 那里的人很友好。

I met your sister on my way home. 我在回家路上遇見了你妹妹。

Is there anything on tomorrow? 明天有什么活動嗎？

This was her first day up. 這是她起床的第一天。

還有一些單詞定語在后面的情況可參閱第14.3.1節(jié)。

2) 下面各類定語都放在所修飾詞的后面：

a. 定語從句：

The noise he made woke everybody up. 他弄出的響聲把大家都吵醒了。

Everyone who (that) knew him liked him. 認(rèn)識他的人都喜歡他。

She gave me this jumper, which she had knitted herself. 她給了我這件毛衣，這是她親手織的。

b. 介詞短語：

He was a Doctor of Philosophy in economics of Yale. 他是耶魯大學(xué)的經(jīng)濟學(xué)博士。

She looked to be a young woman of twenty. 她看起來像一個二十歲的青年女子。

He was hired to illustrate a book on the birds of the world. 他受雇為一本描寫世界鳥類的書畫插圖。

c. 分詞短語和不定式短語：

People waiting for the bus often shelter in my doorway. 等公共汽車的人常常在我家門道里躲雨。

Is this the table reserved for us? 這是給我們留的桌子嗎？

They need a garden to play in. 他們需要一座花園好在里面玩耍。

d. 其他作定語的短語：

They saw a building about sixty stories high. 他們看見一座六十層左右的高樓。

Soldiers normally timid don't fight well. 平時就膽小的士兵打起仗來也不行。

She has done a play, at once educational and witty. 她寫了一個劇本，既有教育意義，又詼諧幽默。

24.4.2　定語和所修飾詞分開的情況

1) 定語有時和它修飾的詞分開：

What do you have to say in this regard? 關(guān)于這一點你有什么要說？ （to say修飾what）

All we have left is some cold meat. 我們只剩了一些冷肉。

I saw something in the paper which might interest you. 我在報上看到一些東西，你可能會感興趣。

Can you see who those people are standing at the gate? 你能看清楚站在大門口的那些人都是誰嗎？

2) 一個名詞有時有兩個定語，其中一個就不得不和它修飾的詞分開：

This is the book I bought about space flight. 這是我買的一本關(guān)于太空飛行的書。

Is there anyone among you interested in going to the caves? 你們中誰有興趣去參觀那些洞穴？

Have you got any novels by Tolstoy in English translation? 你有沒有托爾斯泰小說的英譯本？

24.4.3　定語的順序

1) 一個名詞有幾個定語時，大體上按下面順序排列：

2) 有個別定語可放在冠詞a（n）或the前面：

　　such a nice person 　　so short a time

　　rather a hard time 　　too small an income

　　many a student 　　quite a lot (number)

　　half an hour 　　quite a gentleman

　　half the distance 　　twice the amount

　　double the amount 　　quite the fashion

3) 一個名詞有幾個形容詞修飾時，表示基本品質(zhì)的詞，離所修飾的詞最近，其他可大致按品質(zhì)、大小、形狀等特點安排：

語言是靈活的，這樣的歸納只能作參考，實際情況需要自己觀察，關(guān)于形容詞位置可參閱第14.3.1節(jié)。
