Out from Jerusalem, the king rode with his great war chiefs and lords of state,
從耶路撒冷城,國王躍馬而出帶著軍官和領(lǐng)主,
And Sheba's queen with them.
還有示巴女王。
Proud in the Syrian sun,
在敘利亞的陽光下,
In gold and purple sheen,
披著金色和紫色華服,
The dusky Ethiop queen smiled on King Solomon.
高傲的示巴女王,微笑地凝視著所羅門王。
Wisest of men, he knew the languages of all,
所有人中他是最聰明的,懂所有的語言,
the creatures great or small, That trod the earth or flew.
不論大小生物,不論飛禽走獸。
Across an ant-hill led the king's path, and he heard its small folk, and their word, he thus interpreted:
國王在路上,經(jīng)過一處蟻丘,聽到小螞蟻交談,他懂得它們是這么說的:
Here comes the king men greet, as wise and good and just,
令人愛戴的王來了,他聰明,善良又正直
To crush us in the dust under his heedless feet.
可是卻要無情地把我們踩在腳下了。
The great king bowed his head,
國王把螞蟻的話,
And saw the wide surprise, of the Queen of Sheba's eyes
轉(zhuǎn)述給示巴女王,低頭他看見,
As he told her what they said.
她眼中露出的驚訝。
"O king!" she whispered sweet,
“哦,王!”她甜蜜地低語,
Too happy fate have they, who perish in thy way, beneath thy gracious feet!
他們真幸運(yùn),即使?fàn)奚?,也要犧牲在你光榮的腳下。
Thou of the God-lent crown, Shall these vile creatures dare, Murmur against thee where the knees of kings kneel down?
你的王位是神賦予的,所有的王向你跪拜,這些卑微的小動(dòng)物,竟敢對(duì)你嘀嘀咕咕?
"Nay," Solomon replied,
“不,”所羅門王回答,
The wise and strong should seek yhe welfare of the weak; and turned his horse aside.
智慧和強(qiáng)大的人應(yīng)為弱者謀福利;于是調(diào)轉(zhuǎn)馬頭。
His train, with quick alarm, curved with their leader round, the ant-hill's peopled mound, and left it free from harm.
并告知隨從保持警覺,隨他一起繞過蟻丘,不能讓蟻丘的螞蟻,受到絲毫傷害。
The jeweled head bent low;
戴著無數(shù)珠寶的女王,
"O king!" she said, "henceforth, the secret of thy worth And wisdom well I know.
低頭說,噢,王,我終于明白了人的價(jià)值和智慧的秘密。
Happy must be the State whose ruler heedeth more, the murmurs of the poor, than flatteries of the great.
君主關(guān)心窮人疾苦,勝過權(quán)貴的奉承,生活在這個(gè)國家的人,他們是有福的。
