A woman and her brother-in-law could never get along.

One day she said to him, "If you were my husband，I'd put poison in your juice?"

He replied, "If I were your husband, I'd drink that juice."

1.A woman and her brother-in-law could never get along.

有個(gè)女人和她的小叔一直相處得不好。

"in law"是“在法律上”的意思，也就是說A若與B結(jié)婚，A的親人就成了B法律上的親戚。而非血緣上的親戚， 所以對(duì)B而言，A的 brother就是B的brother-in-law;A的mother，就成了B的mother-in-law。依此類推。

有一天她對(duì)小叔說：“如果你是我丈夫，我會(huì)在你的果汁里放毒藥。”

在這個(gè)句子中，if之后是虛擬語氣，表示與現(xiàn)在事實(shí)相反的假設(shè)應(yīng)用過去式，所以句中用you were及I'd(=I would),不論if后的主語是第幾人稱或單復(fù)數(shù)，be動(dòng)同一律用were.如果If Tom were at home, I'd tell him.(如果湯姆在家，我會(huì)告訴他。)，事實(shí)上湯姆并不在家。
