A gangster wanted to corrupt a politician. He offered a fancy diamond watch in return for a favor. The politician said, "It's bribery. I can't accept it."

The gangster said, "I'll sell you the watch for $20 dollars instead." The politician smiled a great big smile. He answered, "In that case, I'll take two."

Notes:

1. A gangster wanted to corrupt a politician.

有一個幫派分子想要賄賂一個政客。

”gangster”是指“幫派分子”，若要表示幫派集團，則用 gango politician和slatesnmn都是政治家，但前者也指貪圖名利的政客，而后者也指公正有風(fēng)度的政治家。

gangster n.黑道集團的成員;幫派分子 gang n.暴力集團;幫派 statesman n.政治家

2. He offered a fancy diamond watch in return for a favor.

他送了一只非常昂貴的鉆石表，以回報政客的幫助。

fancy adj. 極昂貴的 in return for 回報

3. The politician said, "It's bribery. I can't accept it."

這個政客說：“這是賄賂，我不能收。”

“bribery”指“賄賂的行為”，如：commit brihery(行賄);bribe"是指“賄賂的物品，如：offer bribes(行賄);“bribe” 也可以當(dāng)動詞使用，表示“賄賂(人)”，如：bribe an official with money(用錢賄賂一名官員)。

4. The gangster said, "I'll sell you the watch for $20 dollars instead."

這個穆派分子說：“那我將這只表20美元賣給你。”

instead除了可放在句尾當(dāng)副詞使用.也可加上of當(dāng)介詞使用，如：Let's study English instead of watching TV. 我們來學(xué)英語，不要看電視了。

5. The politician smiled a great big smile.

這個政客臉上綻開了笑容。

“smile ...smile”表示"做出一個…的笑容”，前一個smile 是動詞，后一個是名詞。great當(dāng)副詞時通常是表示“很好地”,但在這里是用以修飾表示“大”的形容詞，起強調(diào)的作用。

6. He answered, "In that case, I'll take two."

他回答說：“如果是那樣的話，我買兩個。”

“in that case"表示“如果那樣的話“in any case”表示 “無論如何;總之”，“in no case”表示“在任何情況下絕不”， “incase”可以表示：①以防萬一(通常放在句尾);②如果···，若是(當(dāng)連接詞);③以防···(當(dāng)連接詞)。
