43 THE PARROTA True Story	四十三鸚鵡

The deep affections of the breast	胸膛里蘊(yùn)藏的無限深情，
That Heaven to living things imparts,	原是上天對生命的賜予，
Are not exclusively possess'd	這卻并不是人類的心靈
By human hearts.	獨有的天賦。
A Parrot, from the Spanish main,	一只鸚鵡，年輕，翅膀亮，
Full young and early caged came o'er,	在籠中，從西班牙所豁的大陸
With bright wings, to the bleak domain	飄洋來到這馬耳島岸上——
Of Mulla's shore.	凄涼的國土。
To spicy groves where he had won	向芳香樹叢（從這兒他獲得
His plumage of resplendent hue,	一身羽毛，色彩絢爛），
His native fruits, and skies, and sun,	向青天，陽光，故鄉(xiāng)的水果，
He bade adieu.	他說聲再見。
For these he changed the smoke of turf,	換來的是泥炭燒出的濃煙，
A heathery land and misty sky,	石南滿地長，天空霧茫茫，
And turn'd on rocks and raging surf	他金色的眼睛轉(zhuǎn)向巉巖
His golden eye.	和咆哮的海浪。
But petted in our climate cold,	仍受到寵愛，在寒冷地帶，
He lived and chatter'd many a day:	他活著，長時間喋喋不休：
Until with age, from green and gold	到老邁，翅膀變灰白，不再
His wings grew gray.	金燦燦，綠油油。
At last when blind, and seeming dumb,	最后眼瞎了，像成了啞巴，
He scolded, laugh'd, and spoke no more,	他罵人，傻笑，不再言語；
A Spanish stranger chanced to come	一個西班牙人偶然到
To Mulla's shore;	達(dá)這馬耳島嶼；
He hail'd the bird in Spanish speech,	他用西班牙語來招呼鸚鵡，
The bird in Spanish speech replied;	鸚鵡也用西班牙語答復(fù)；
Flapp'd round the cage with joyous screech,	繞籠子振翅，喜極而尖呼，
Dropt down, and died.	跌下來，死去。
