34 THE SCARECROW	三十四稻草人

All winter through I bow my head	整個(gè)冬天我把頭低著，
Beneath the driving rain;	在瓢潑大雨下捱淋;
The North wind powders me with snow	北風(fēng)灑了我一身白雪，
And blows me black again;	又把我吹成原形;
At midnight under a maze of stars	夜半一片迷人的星光下，
I flame with glittering rime,	我披著嚴(yán)霜閃熠，
And stand, above the stubble, stiff	我站在麥茬地里，像一副
As mail at morning-prime.	鎧甲，迎來(lái)了晨曦。
But when that child, called Spring, and all	等到那名叫春天的孩子
His host of children, come,	帶一群兒童到來(lái)，
Scattering their buds and dew upon	把蓓蕾和露珠向著我家
These acres of my home,	這一方田地撒開(kāi)，
Some rapture in my rags awakes;	我一身破衣里就升起狂喜;
I lift void eyes and scan	我抬起無(wú)珠的眼審視
The skies for crows, those ravening foes	天上的烏鴉：我那怪主人——
Of my strange master, Man.	人類——的貪婪仇敵。
I watch him striding lank behind	我看見(jiàn)主人趕著牛拉犁，
His clashing team, and know	大步走過(guò)，我知道
Soon will the wheat swish body high	在曾經(jīng)積雪的田地里，
Where once lay sterile snow;	麥子很快會(huì)竄得一人高;
Soon shall I gaze across a sea	我的視線很快會(huì)越過(guò)
Of sun-begotten grain,	陽(yáng)光培育的麥海，
Which my unflinching watch hath sealed	我的勇敢的守護(hù)保證了
For harvest once again	又一次豐收到來(lái)。
