A:This long scroll is a Gongbi.
B:What does Gongbi mean?
A:Gongbi is a traditional Chinese realistic painting characterized by its fine brushwork and close attention to details.
B:Oh, look! So many kangaroos. Is this some kind of watercolor?
A:Something like that, but not exactly the same. It's called gouache.
B:Chinese painting is so glorious.
A:Hello, Betty. I haven't seen you for a long time.
B:Hi, Tom. It's nice to see you again. A:What a crowd of people here today!
B:It's nothing unusual. This new impressionist is very popular now. He focuses on portraits and still life.
A:Well, I think he's really talented.
B:Yes, I can't agree with you more. The painting is so fantastic. Look at the colors. They blend together so well.
A:He's done a number of beautiful paintings. Look, this is one of his more recent works.
B:Oh, I see, this is a different style. It's more detailed and the colors are softer. It's not bad, but I prefer the paintings we saw just now.
A:I've got some free tickets for an art exhibition on Sunday. Do you want to go with me?
B:Sure, I've nothing better to do. Which art gallery is it at?
A:It's at one of the galleries in the 798 Art District. I was thinking about going around 4 p.m.
B:OK. And who are the artists?
A:They are some new-up and coming modern artists in Beijing.
B:Well, that sounds interesting. Have you heard of any of them before?
A:Only one. Zhang Xiaoping, have you heard of her?
B:Yeah, I have seen some of her photographs. I think she's a really talented artist.
A:She will bring her new works at the exhibition.
B:Wow, I'm looking forward to seeing them. See you on Sunday.
A:What a crowd of people here today!
B:It's nothing unusual, for it's a joint art show of the world-famous artists, both past and present.
A:So that's why there are so many foreigners among the crowd. But who are those people over there?
B:They must be those who haven't yet gotten their tickets. They are trying every means now.
A:Why don't they print and distribute more tickets since tickets are so badly needed?
B:You can't say so. You know, it's the first day of the show. And usually tickets on such occasions are a little short.
A:Oh, I see.
B:Let's go in.
A:What's this? I just can't understand it.
B:You mean this giant canvas? It's Guernica. It was made by Picasso in 1937, aimed to commemorate a town bombed by German planes. Look here, it looks somewhat like a dying horse and this is said to be murdered children, so it's a picture of a mined world with strange shapes of a dying horse and murdered children.
A:No wonder why it looks so terrible.
B:Your feeling shows you are quite correct. It's really a violent expression of revolt against the horror of modem warfare, in a language not understood by ordinary men.
A:Thank you for your flattering words.
