638　stop，cease，quit，give up，bear和endure后接的詞

① stop后跟不定式表示“停下一件事去做另一件事”，為兩個動作。stop后跟動名詞表示“停止做某事”，為一個動作。比較：

She stopped to watch TV. 她停下來看電視。（停下正在做的事情，去看電視）

She stopped watching TV. 她不看電視了。（停止了看電視）

They stopped to have a rest. 他們停了下來，休息一下。（停下手中的活，休息）

They stopped having a rest. 他們中止了休息。

We stopped to talk to each other. 我們停下來，說說話。

We stopped talking to each other. 我們停止了談話。

It stopped to rain.

It stopped raining.

雨不下了。

Stop singing. You are making too much noise. 不要唱了。聲音太吵人了。（不可說Stop to sing…）

stop sb./sth.（from）doing sth.也是常用結(jié)構(gòu)，表示“阻止某人做某事，阻止某事發(fā)生”。

We must stop Jim （from）talking with other students in class. 我們必須阻止吉姆在課堂上同別的學(xué)生說話。

Measures should be taken to stop the chemical factory from polluting the rivers. 應(yīng)該采取措施阻止化工廠污染河流。

② cease后可接動名詞或不定式，意義相同。

At last they ceased to talk.

At last they ceased talking. 他們終于停止談話了。

③ quit后可接名詞或動名詞，通常不接不定式。

He quit reading to take a walk. 他停下閱讀散一會兒步。

I have quit smoking. 我戒煙了。

④ give up后只可接名詞或動名詞，不可接不定式。

Jim has given up gambling. 吉姆不賭博了。

⑤ bear和endure表示“忍受”時，后可接名詞、代詞、動名詞或不定式。

I can't bear to see you like this. 看到你這個樣子我受不了。

She can't bear being laughed at. 她受不了被人嘲笑。

She can't endure to see him go.

She can't endure seeing him go. 看見他走，她真是舍不得。
