515　opposite to，be opposed to，opposite和contrary

① opposite to中的opposite是形容詞，意為“在……的對面，和……相反”，用作表語或狀語。

They sat opposite to each other. 他們面對面坐著。

This is opposite to my views. 這同我的看法相反。

② be opposed to意為“反對，與……相對立”。

He is opposed to my doing so. 他反對我這樣做。

Black is opposed to white. 黑與白相對。

③ opposite常指相反的位置、方向、結(jié)果、性質(zhì)等，但不一定有敵對的意思。

She went into the opposite room. 她去了對面那個(gè)房間。

It will produce an opposite effect. 這將產(chǎn)生相反的效果。

④ contrary常表示相反的意思、目的、計(jì)劃、趣味等，有時(shí)含有敵對或矛盾的意味。contrary to表示“與……相反”。

The result is contrary to expectation. 結(jié)果與預(yù)料的情況恰恰相反。

My sister's taste in dresses is contrary to mine. 我妹妹對服飾的審美觀與我完全不同。
