390　intellect，intelligence，intellectual和wit

① intellect是“才智，智能”，比intelligence（ability to learn and understand 聰穎，靈性）高，人類以外的動(dòng)物可能是 intelligent，只有人類才具有 intellect。intellectual是“受過教育的”意思（highly educated）。intellect和intellectual都可作名詞表示人，intellect是指“才智很高的人”，intellectual是“知識(shí)分子”。

He was born into a family noted for its intellect. 他出身于一個(gè)書香門第。

A teacher is an intellectual worker. 教師是腦力勞動(dòng)者。

A dog is more intelligent than a cat. 狗比貓更有靈性。

② wit指“機(jī)智”，作“理解力”解時(shí)常用復(fù)數(shù)形式。

The president's intelligence and wit enlivened his press conference. 總統(tǒng)的聰明與機(jī)智使他的記者招待會(huì)氣氛活躍。

He didn't have the wits to see that point. 他缺乏理解那一要點(diǎn)的能力。
