115　besides，but，except，except for和except+從句都可以表示“除外”，但有區(qū)別

① except表示“除……外”，指除去的不算在內(nèi)，except的賓語(yǔ)排除在外。besides表示“除……外（還有）”，besides的賓語(yǔ)也算在內(nèi)。

They went there except Tom. 除了湯姆外，他們都去那里了。（湯姆沒去）

They all went there besides Tom. 湯姆去那里了，他們也都去那里了。（湯姆也去了）

Except maths，they study Chinese and English. 他們學(xué)習(xí)中文和英語(yǔ)，不學(xué)數(shù)學(xué)。（數(shù)學(xué)除外）

Besides maths，they study Chinese and English. 除了數(shù)學(xué)，他們還學(xué)中文和英語(yǔ)。（數(shù)學(xué)也包括在內(nèi)）

② but用作介詞，表示“除外”時(shí)，與except同義，被除去的不包括在內(nèi)，常同no，every，any構(gòu)成的復(fù)合詞連用，構(gòu)成none but，nothing but，anybody but，everyone but，everywhere but，nowhere but以及no one but，all but等結(jié)構(gòu)。

Nobody but he can do it. 除了他，沒有人能做這件事。

She eats nothing but fruit. 除了水果，她什么也不吃。

I know them all but one. 他們之中除一人外我全認(rèn)識(shí)。

He could see nothing but sand. 除了沙子，他什么也看不見。

③ except和except for都表示除外的不算在內(nèi)，但用法不同。except “除去”的部分和前面講述的部分是同一個(gè)層次的同一類事物，而except for所“除去”的部分與前面講述的部分不是同一個(gè)層次的同一類事物，“除去的”通常是整體中的一個(gè)細(xì)節(jié)，或是句中所論述的整體內(nèi)容中的一個(gè)部分。

This article is good，except for a few spelling mistakes. 這篇文章寫得不錯(cuò)，只是有幾處拼寫錯(cuò)誤。（整體中的細(xì)節(jié)，不可用except）

Except for an old lady，the bus was empty. 除了一位老太太外，整個(gè)汽車都是空的。（old lady和bus不是同類）

There is hardly any industry in the town except for two ship-building plants. 除了兩家造船廠外，這個(gè)小鎮(zhèn)幾乎沒有什么工業(yè)。（industry和two ship-building plants是整體與部分的關(guān)系）

④ except+that從句、what 從句、when從句等也表示除去的不算在內(nèi)。

It is a very good house except that it is a little too far from the town. 這是一所很好的房子，只是離城稍遠(yuǎn)一些。

The old lady comes here every day except when it rains. 除非下雨，那位老太太天天到這里來(lái)。

I know nothing about it except what you told me. 除了你告訴我的外，其他我一無(wú)所知。

⑤ but和except后可跟不定式，但必須注意，如果句中的謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞是do， but和except后的不定式省略to，而如果是其他動(dòng)詞，to不可省略。

比較

She couldn't do anything but/except wait. 除了等待之外，她毫無(wú)辦法。

He can do nothing but/except cry. 他只會(huì)哭。

He had no choice but/except to go with her. 除了同她一起去之外，他別無(wú)選擇。

She wanted nothing but/except to have a room. 她除了要一個(gè)房間外別無(wú)所求。

提示

注意下面一句中but后的不定式用不用to均可，因?yàn)榍懊娴膁o不是主要謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞。

There was clearly nothing left to do but（to）wait and see. 顯然沒有別的辦法，只好等著瞧。

⑥ except后還可跟副詞，這時(shí)不用but。

She has always been in high spirits except recently. 她總是精神飽滿，可是近來(lái)卻不是這樣。

⑦ 用于否定句時(shí)，but，except和besides可換用。

He rarely went anywhere except/but to his office. 除辦公室外，他很少去其他地方。

There aren't any other people to be considered but/besides/except Mr. Brown. 除布朗先生外，其他人將不予考慮。

⑧ but用于last but…one，next…but one，the highest…but one中，意為“隔一……，倒數(shù)第二……”。

She lives in the last house but one in that street. 她住在那條街上倒數(shù)第二幢房子里。

The Browns live in the next house but one. 布朗一家住在隔壁的隔壁。

It is the highest mountain but one in this country. 它是這個(gè)國(guó)家的第二高的山。

This is the longest river but two in the world. 這是世界上第三大河。
