① ability主要指人的智力或體力，含有能夠干好的意味，后常接to do sth.或in sth./for sth.。復(fù)數(shù)形式abilities表示“才能，專門技能”。
The Americans are celebrated for their inventive ability. 美國人以發(fā)明創(chuàng)造才能著稱。
I do not doubt your ability to do the work. 我不懷疑你有從事這項(xiàng)工作的能力。
She is trying hard to improve her conversational abilities. 她在努力提高會話能力。
② capability的含義與ability相近，主要指人天生或潛在的“能力”，后接to do sth.，for sth.或of doing sth.。復(fù)數(shù)形式capabilities常表示“潛在的能力”。
He has the capability of solving/to solve practical problems. 他有解決實(shí)際問題的能力。
It is quite beyond his capabilities. 這大大超過了他的能力范圍。
He is a man of great capabilities and should be trained. 他是個很有潛力的人，應(yīng)該加以培養(yǎng)。

③ capacity指接受、理解能力，吸收、容納能力，可用于人或物，后接for（doing）sth.或of sth.。

He has no capacity for improvement. 他是朽木不可雕。
The auditorium has a capacity of 800 people. 這個大禮堂可以容納800人。
He has a mind of great capacity. 他理解力極強(qiáng)。

⑥ gift也指先天的能力（ability）和素質(zhì)（quality），這和talent差不多，但gift意味著源于上帝或大自然恩賜，命運(yùn)中帶來的，不一定具備創(chuàng)造能力（creative ability）和原創(chuàng)性（originality），能泛指任何一種個人的突出的能力。
