Harvard College attaches great importance to the involvement of students,parents into their children’s college education and life. Each year, before freshmen go to campus, their parents will receive a “Parents Handbook” from the College. This handbook gives parents a supplementary guide to the undergraduate curriculum and the range of services and resources available to their children. Then in the next four years, parents will have two chances to have a further understanding of the university in which their children will study and live for four years.

In the first semester of the first year, as is tradition, Harvard College offers a window into the lives of its freshmen during Freshman Parents Weekend. Among the opportunities offered are tours of Harvard Museum of Natural History, Widener Library, and Houses. In addition to the tours, Freshman Parents Weekend offers a program that includes faculty lectures and panel discussion about academic and student-life issues. There are discussions covering topics that include the Program in General Education, the diversity of the new class, as well as community life on campus.

The whole schedule has been designed to give parents an experience of what it’s like to be a student here at Harvard and to experience the community of Harvard, and to let parents feel connected to what their students are experiencing and have some context when they talk to their students.

Then in the second semester of the third year, parents come back to join their children during Junior Parents Weekend, and learn what to expect during the last year at Harvard. As is the case during Freshman Parents Weekend, tours and open houses are offered in the libraries, museums,and student centers. But Junior Parents Weekend also focuses on the challenges and opportunities that students will face as they prepare for life beyond Harvard, Parents will have discussion with career advisers the various aspects of career exploration and next step planning, including jobs, fellowships, graduate programs, and business, medical, and law school. They will listen to seniors discussing their time at the College and how they made the most of their experience. Junior Parents Weekend is a great time to see what the College can offer closer to graduation.

Many first-year students and their parents tour Widener Library, the University’s flagship reference center for the humanities and social sciences. Opened in 1915, Widener is home to mazes of metal stacks that contain its vast holdings. Parents take in the library’s grandeur and its impressive reading rooms, its specialty collections, and the grand stairwell accented by two John Singer Sargent paintings-treasures that their children will enjoy for the next four years.
