在美國，警察過去常常對無權(quán)無勢的普通人使用刑訊逼供。人們遂借（the）third degree喻指（警察的）疲勞詢問；逼供；拷問，同時還把“逮捕”和“入獄”分別婉稱為the first degree（第一級）和the second degree（第二級）。
