這個(gè)表達(dá)在16世紀(jì)早期就已經(jīng)在英語中使用了。然而在別的語言中也早有類似的表達(dá)出現(xiàn)。它的意思來自于字面的表達(dá)。

cart表示“馬車”，我們都知道馬車就是馬拉的車，一般是馬在前面，車是它拉的對(duì)象，放在后面。而如果出現(xiàn)了有人把馬車放在馬的前面的情況，是不是整個(gè)馬車就沒辦法工作了?因此，這個(gè)短語強(qiáng)調(diào)的就是做事的順序錯(cuò)了的話，那么整個(gè)事情的效率就會(huì)變低。

A: Why are you dusting your shelves now? You just finished vacuuming.

你為什么現(xiàn)在撣架子上的灰塵?你剛用完吸塵器吸灰塵啊。

B: So what?

那怎么了?

A: You shouldn’t dust after you vacuum. You’ll just add more dust to your clean floors. You’re putting the cart before the horse. You should dust first, then vacuum.

用吸塵器吸塵后就不要再撣灰塵了吧。這樣只會(huì)給剛干凈的地板增加更多的灰塵。你把順序顛倒了。你應(yīng)該先撣，然后用吸塵器吸。
