這個表達其實來自于軍隊，它暗指軍事戰(zhàn)斗是一方從另一方奪取領土(ground)這樣一個行為，奪得領土就算是取得了進展。相應的，失去領土也就是lose ground作為這個習語的反義詞，意思是遭受挫折，不能繼續(xù)之前的進步。
