Beijing replaces English words on subway signs

Authorities in Beijing have been replacing certain English words on the capital’s subway with romanised Chinese ahead of the Winter Olympics in February.

在2月份冬季奧運會到來之際，北京當(dāng)局正將首都地鐵上的某些英語單詞替換為漢語拼音。

The English word “station” was replaced with “Zhan,” which is the pinyin version of the Chinese character.

In some places, station names such as Olympic Park and Terminal 2 of the Beijing airport were changed to “Aolinpike Gongyuan” and “2 Hao Hangzhanlou”.

在某些地方，站名譬如“奧林匹克公園”和“北京機(jī)場2號航站樓”等名稱改為"Aolinpike Gongyuan"和“2 Hao Hangzhanlou”。

By changing "station" to "zhan", the subway authorities have triggered discussions online, with some netizens saying it will confuse non-Chinese subway users.
