“raise hell”是“升起地獄”?別鬧了，還是說點兒現(xiàn)實的吧

英語表達中

經(jīng)常有些短語或詞組很令人費解

看字面意思根本不知道它想表達什么

也難怪經(jīng)常會鬧笑話了

這也是英語學(xué)習(xí)中比較有難度的部分

畢竟我們沒有相應(yīng)的語言環(huán)境

只能靠慢慢積累，降低錯誤率了

今天就來分享幾個“藏”得很深的短語

go up in smoke

泡湯

“泡湯”意思是“計劃等失敗、中途天折”

英語中用go up in smoke來表示

Because of the heavy rain,our plan of going out went up in smoke.

因為大雨，我們的出行計劃泡湯了。

I was afraid you'd say no, and my dream would go up in smoke.

我擔(dān)心你會說不，那我的夢想就化為泡影了。

如果是錢或投資“泡湯”，其實就是錢被白白浪費了

可以用go down the drain來表示

比如：

All of my money went down the drain.

我的錢都泡湯了。

All our efforts go down the drain because of negligence.

因為疏忽，我們的一切努力前功盡棄。

out of sorts

鬧情緒

不應(yīng)該一看到“情緒”就想用emotion

“鬧情緒”實際是“悶悶不樂的，不滿的”

可以用out of sorts表示

Nobody would bother Bob when he's out of sorts.

鮑勃鬧情緒的時候沒人會去煩他。

對話

A:Why is Jane out of sorts?

簡鬧什么情緒呢?

B:She quarrelled with her boyfriend.

她和男朋友吵架了。

“鬧情緒”還可以表達為in low spirits

Friends are those who encourage us when we are in low spirits.

朋友就是在我們失落時鼓勵我們的人。

raise hell

鬧翻天

“鬧翻天”不是真的把天翻過來，而是形容人吵鬧不停

其英文表達是raise hell

Mary always raises hell when she gets angry.

瑪麗生起氣來總要鬧翻天。

莉莉幾乎要鬧翻天了。

鬧別扭

“鬧別扭”的意思就是“彼此有意見”，可用be at odds表示

Mary is at odds with her boyfriend now.

瑪麗現(xiàn)在正和男朋友鬧別扭。

A:I'm at odds with Tom again.

我又和湯姆鬧別扭了。

B:Oh,for what?

哦，為什么啊?

人們在鬧別扭時常說的話有：

take it/sth.out on...

拿…出氣

“拿…出氣”的意思就是“向某人發(fā)泄”

在英語中可以用take it/sth.out on...來表示

Jack took his anger out on his dog.

杰克拿自己的狗出氣。

A:Don't tell me what to do!

你少命令我!

B:Hey,I know you're in blue.But there's no need to take it out on me.

嘿，我知道你郁悶。那也沒必要拿我出氣啊。

“拿…出氣”還可以說成vent one's anger on sb.

I know he has angry, but it doesn't mean he can vent his anger on me.
