從“一詞多意”開始了解歪果仁的幽默

我寫了一本關(guān)于制造鐘表的書……人人都說it was about time(差不多挺是時候的，那是關(guān)于時間的書)。

about time：關(guān)于時間，about介詞：關(guān)于;

about time：大約是時候了，about副詞：大約。

2. Teacher: George, can you give me Lincoln's Gettysburg Address?

George: No, but he used to live at the White House in Washing D.C.

老師：George，你能給我林肯的蓋茨堡演講嗎?

address：地址，演講。George還以為老師向他要林肯家的地址呢。

律師：為什么問這個，是的，——海軍細(xì)條紋衣服。

suit：一套衣服，訴訟。律師把法官的意思理解成(或故意理解成)：你穿著其它衣服在本法庭上出現(xiàn)過嗎?

6. Do people fish with a permit in this area? ---- No, we fish with a bait.

人們在這個地方釣魚需要許可證嗎?

不，我們用魚餌釣魚。

故意理解成：人們在這個地方用許可證釣魚嗎?

7. We've got the kind of President who thinks arms control means some kind of deodorant(除臭劑).

我們有這類總統(tǒng)，他認(rèn)為軍備控制是指某種除臭劑。

arms control：軍備控制。諷刺一位美國總統(tǒng)很無知，認(rèn)為那是控制胳膊臭味兒的腋下除臭劑。

8. Athlete: I'm going to write an article on jogging.

Editor: Fine. But don't use any run-on sentences.

運動員：我要寫一篇關(guān)于慢跑的文章。

編輯：好的，但不要用沒完沒了的句子。

9. Mary kissed her aunt good-bye but her aunt didn't kiss her back. Why?

Her aunt kissed her face.

瑪麗吻別她的姑姑，但她姑姑沒有吻別它，為什么?

她姑姑吻了她的臉。

Kiss her back: 回吻她，吻她的背。

10. Madge: I've been asked to marry thousands of times.

Mindy: Really? Who asked you?

Madge: My mother and father.

Madge：我已經(jīng)被幾千次被要求結(jié)婚。(還可理解成：被幾千次求過婚。)

Mindy：真的?誰求婚?

Madge：我的爸爸媽媽。

父母ask(要求)她趕緊結(jié)婚，而不是男人ask for marriage(求婚)。

11. What did the Atlantic Ocean say to the Pacific Ocean?

Nothing, they just waved.

大西洋對太平洋說什么?——什么也沒說，它們只是wave(波動，招手)。

Wave：波動，招手。

12. Construction company needs a man to dig holes --- Ground level position available.

建筑公司要招一個人挖坑——初級位置空缺。

ground level：地水準(zhǔn)平面，初級位置。

13. Father: What should you do when you see our flag waving?

Little boy: Wave back.

父親：當(dāng)你看到我們的國旗飄揚時你應(yīng)該做什么?

小男孩兒：也向它揮手。

wave：飄揚，揮手。
