Fred:Hi, Todd.

弗雷德：你好，托德。

Todd:Frederick, we are talking about school and education and our topic now is homework. Do you think students in university should have lots of homework?

托德：弗雷德里克，我們之前談了學(xué)校和教育，今天的話題是作業(yè)。你認(rèn)為大學(xué)生應(yīng)該做很多作業(yè)嗎?

Fred:I think your question is very precise. I think students in university is different than students in high school or junior college. Now in university, you should be a responsible student. Now what I mean by being a responsible student is that the teacher doesn't have to tell you what you should do. You should know what you have to do, and so homework perhaps should not be something so important to you as a responsible student.

弗雷德：我認(rèn)為你的問題很精確。我認(rèn)為大學(xué)生和高中生還有初中生不一樣。在大學(xué)里應(yīng)該成為一名負(fù)責(zé)的學(xué)生。負(fù)責(zé)的學(xué)生意思是，老師不用告訴他們應(yīng)該做什么。學(xué)生自己應(yīng)該知道他們要做什么，而作業(yè)對負(fù)責(zé)的學(xué)生來說并不是太重要。

Todd:So, you are saying that students should studyon their own.

托德：所以你的意思是學(xué)生應(yīng)該自主學(xué)習(xí)。

Fred:They should.

弗雷德：對，自主學(xué)習(xí)。

Todd:And not be told what to study?

托德：不應(yīng)該由老師告訴他們應(yīng)該學(xué)什么嗎?

Fred:They should be told what to study, but they should not be told how they should studyby giving them a framework of homework.

弗雷德：老師要告訴學(xué)生他們應(yīng)該學(xué)什么，不過不能通過留作業(yè)來告訴他們應(yīng)該怎樣學(xué)習(xí)。

Todd:Alright, so for example if they are studying math they should be told what principles they need to learn but they shouldn't actually have to do a handout andturnitinevery day.

托德：好，舉例來說，如果學(xué)習(xí)數(shù)學(xué)，那老師應(yīng)該教給學(xué)生他們要學(xué)習(xí)的理論，不應(yīng)該讓學(xué)生們每天都交作業(yè)。

Fred:No, because they know that at the end of the semester they will have and exam and if they haven't done what theywere supposed to, well, I don't think they can pass that class.

弗雷德：對，因為學(xué)生們知道學(xué)期末會有考試，如果他們沒有完成應(yīng)該學(xué)習(xí)的內(nèi)容，那他們就不能通過考試。

Todd:As a teacher, I'm not so sure because you are a very motivated person and I think many students are motivated and disciplined like you but I have many students I think that just are not motivated and they won't do it unless I make them do it, like if I make them do it, then they might generate interest and they might improve but if I I don't make themhand inhomework, if I don't tell them what to do, I don't think they'll study at all. They'll just party and have fun.

托德：作為老師，我不太確定你的看法是否正確，你是一個上進(jìn)心很強的人，我認(rèn)為大部分學(xué)生都像你這樣既有上進(jìn)心又遵守紀(jì)律，不過我也教過許多沒有上進(jìn)心的學(xué)生，如果我讓他們交作業(yè)，那他們就不會做，如果我要求交作業(yè)，那他們可能會產(chǎn)生興趣，成績進(jìn)步，但是如果不讓他們交作業(yè)，不告訴他們要做什么，我想他們就完全不會學(xué)習(xí)了。他們會四處吃喝玩樂和享受。

Fred:OK, Iagree withyou. There are certain students that need to be told what to do. There are people that have a hard time doing thingsby themselves. I agree with you, but perhaps this idea of homework, it just kind of comes out of high school or junior high school where the teacher tells you what to do, but in university it's different because assignment would be very important, so perhaps you would give the students and assignement every week but not homework every day and the assignment would count for a certain percentage and then that would give the incentive to the students to do it. If you don't give the students any incentive, then they will not be motivated.

弗雷德：好，我同意你的觀點。的確有一些學(xué)生需要被告知要做什么。有些人很難去自主做事。我同意你的觀點，不過我認(rèn)為作業(yè)是高中和初中的產(chǎn)物，中學(xué)老師會告訴學(xué)生要做什么，可是大學(xué)不一樣，對大學(xué)生來說學(xué)習(xí)任務(wù)比較重要，老師可以每周給學(xué)生布置學(xué)習(xí)任務(wù)，而不是每天留課外作業(yè)，學(xué)習(xí)任務(wù)應(yīng)該在學(xué)分占有一定比例，這樣學(xué)生會更積極地去完成。如果不給學(xué)生一些激勵，那他們可能不會太積極。

Todd:That's a good point. I agree with you somewhat.

托德：你說的有道理。我部分同意你的觀點。
