Exercise is the key to life, and researchers at Seoul national university in South Korea have found that moderate to vigorous exercise such as brisk walking, dancing, gardening, cycling and running can help prevent cardiovascular disease in older people.

The study was based on data from South Korea's health insurance service system, which included more than 1.1 million older adults aged ≥ 60 with no previous history of cardiovascular disease. They underwent two consecutive physical examinations in 2009-2010 and 2011-2012, and were followed up until the end of 2016.

Their average age was 67, and two-thirds of them reported little physical activity at both checkups.

At the second checkup, 22 percent of the previously inactive seniors had increased their activity, while those who had previously exercised at least five times a week had become inactive.

The researchers' analysis of data showed that compared with those who had been inactive, those who had switched from infrequent exercise to one to two, three to four times a week and ≥5 moderate to vigorous exercise had a 5 percent, 11 percent and 9 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease, respectively, during the study period.

Those who had been active at least once or twice a week before becoming inactive had up to a 27 percent increased risk of cardiovascular disease, compared with those who had been active at moderate to high intensity.

The researchers found that for people over 60 years of age, active participation in moderate to high intensity exercise significantly reduced the overall risk of cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, and stroke.

In addition, people with disabilities and older adults with high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, and type 2 diabetes can benefit from moderate to high intensity exercise.

Older people may find it harder and harder to exercise regularly as they age, but active exercise is essential for cardiovascular health.

Disabled and old people with chronic diseases should also be so, but must be on the premise of safety, discomfort promptly stop or seek medical treatment.
