People in the US and Canada spend more time indoors than 12 other countries, according to a new study.

About 25 percent of 2,239 Americans surveyed spend 21 – 24 hours a day inside, 34 percent spend 0 – 14 hours inside and the remaining 41 percent frolic indoors 15 – 20 hours a day, the data gathered by global architecture company Velux shows.

Canadians stay inside just a tad more than the US, with 26 percent of 1,005 respondents holed up 21 – 24 hours.

Great Britain ranked third for shut-ins, with about 23 percent of 2,159 respondents staying in 21 – 24 hours.

On the other side of the Atlantic, both Italians and Czechs spend the least about of time inside, with only 5 percent of 2,010 people who stay under a roof for 21 – 24 hours. Fifty-seven percent of residents in the two European countries spend 0 – 14 hours indoors and 38 percent tend to stay in 15 – 20 hours a day.

Velux surveyed 16,000 people in 14 countries including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Switzerland and Spain in order to raise awareness about the dangers of indoor air.

Researchers at Denmark’s Aarhus University found inside air is up to five times more polluted than outside air because of cooking, cleaning, showering, candles, and drying clothes, Velux said.
