While 2016 was a bummer of a year for a whole host of reasons, no on can deny it was a banner year for music.

Why you should check it out: Sturgill Simpson was recently the musical guest on SNL. I saw his name and was ready to dismiss him as just another country act, but boy was I wrong.

Why you should check it out: There was no artist my friends told me to look out for more than Anderson .Paak. After hearing "Malibu" it's easy to figure out why. He's without a doubt an artist to keep an eye on moving forward.

Why you should check it out: Despite the amazing year Chance the Rapper had in 2016, part of me still wants to see the award for "Best Rap Performance" to go to ScHoolboy Q and Kanye for "That Part." It's not easy to let Kanye on a song and keep it your own, but Q pulls it off with impressive ease.
