贈(zèng)予的火光

Once upon a time, a man had heard that in a foreign place, far away, there was a holy flame burning.

從前，有一個(gè)人聽說在一個(gè)遙遠(yuǎn)的地方，有一堆圣火在燃燒。

So he got up and left his home to find the holy flame and bring some of its light back home to his house.

所以他就動(dòng)身離家，前去尋找，希望能給自己帶回一些圣火的光亮。

He thought: When I have this light, then I will have happiness and life and all the people I love will have it too.

他邊走邊想：“當(dāng)我得到圣火的時(shí)候，我的生活將會(huì)變得幸福，所有我愛的人也將得到幸福”。

He traveled far, far away and finally found the holy flame, with which he lit his light.

他走了很遠(yuǎn)很遠(yuǎn)，最后終于發(fā)現(xiàn)了夢(mèng)寐以求的圣火。于是，他用圣火將自己的燈點(diǎn)亮。

On his way back he had only one worry that his light could go out.

在返回的途中，唯一讓他擔(dān)心的是：半道上，圣火會(huì)不會(huì)熄滅。

On his way home he met someone who was freezing and didn't have any fire and who begged him to give him some of his fire.

當(dāng)他興沖沖地往家趕時(shí)，一個(gè)快要凍僵的人攔住了他，請(qǐng)求他用圣火為自己生起一堆篝火，來驅(qū)趕難耐的嚴(yán)寒。

The man with the light hesitated for a moment.

拿著圣火的人遲疑了片刻：

Wasn't his light too precious, too holy to be given away for something ordinary like that?

這么珍貴的圣火，值得用在這樣普通的地方嗎?

Despite these doubts, he decided to give some of his light to the one who was freezing in the darkness.

盡管帶著這些懷疑，他仍然決定分出一些自己的燈火，讓寒夜里這個(gè)快要凍僵的人也享受到溫暖。

The man continued his journey home and when he had almost reached his house a terriblethunderstorm started.

隨后，他繼續(xù)著自己回家的行程。就在他快要到達(dá)時(shí)，一場(chǎng)可怕的雷雨突然襲來。

He tried to protect his light from the rain and the storm, but at the end his light went out.

很不幸，燈火被雷雨澆滅了。

To return the long way back to the place where the holy flame was burning was impossible, he wouldn't have had enough strength to go back this far—but he was strong enough to return to the human being whom he had helped on his way home.

他已無力再走到圣火的燃燒的地方。萬般沮喪間，他忽然想起他曾幫助的那個(gè)人。是的，他還有足夠的力氣走到那個(gè)人所呆的地方。

...and with his light he could light his own again.

在那里，他用自己的曾分出去的圣火，重新點(diǎn)燃了自己的燈。

1.go out 出去，熄滅
